Vivo and Synaptics Partner To Create Under-the-Display Fingerprint Scanner
Recently, we reported on the news that Synaptics had found a way to mass-produce under-the-display fingerprint scanners for smartphones. In the original story, we speculated that it would be Samsung which brought this technology to market due to the fact that the company is one of the leaders in the Android innovation. However, a recent report from Forbes has indicated that it will be Chinese smartphone maker Vivo who will introduce the first under-the-finger display.
The partnership means big things for Vivo and Synaptics, but it also means big things for consumers. Despite the popularity of the iPhone X, many consumers may not be too fond of Face ID for a couple of reasons. The first is that consumers like options. Android phones generally offer users an array of security options including passwords, pattern tests, and fingerprint scanners.
Vivo’s move towards under-the-display fingerprint scanners will also allow the company to continue the trend towards a bezel-less smartphone. Currently, many phone manufacturers are forced to put the fingerprint reader on the back of the device which many consumers dislike or leave a large bezel on the front in order to make room for the fingerprint scanner.
In terms of security, fingerprint scanners offer a bit more peace of mind than pins or gesture-based security features. They aren’t foolproof, but it’s harder to steal your fingerprints than it is to steal your password.
The release date for Vivo’s new phone hasn’t been announced, but the company’s previous press release stated that the phone would be announced soon so we may see something sometime within the first quarter of 2018.
