Essential 2 Confirmed To Be In The Works
In a world where so many companies communicate through press releases, PR firms, and corporate jargon, there’s something refreshing about Essential’s bi-weekly AMA sessions on Reddit and yesterday’s session gave us some interesting bits of news.
One of the first things to discuss is that the Essential is getting a couple of much-needed software updates. First of all, the development team confirmed that Portrait mode was now available as part of an update to the camera app. The updated version of the app can be found on the Google Play Store and includes general bug fixes as well.
More interesting, however, are the reports that an updated version of the Android 8.0 beta would be ready within the week. The update will include improved Bluetooth performance, battery life, and fixes to the touch sensitivity to make the UI more usable. Additionally, they said that Android 8.1 would likely be rolled out without a beta test.
We also got some new information on the hardware side of things. They confirmed that the Stellar Gray version will be available before the end of the year though there were no comments regarding other variants. Additionally, they provided some information on the charging dock accessory and said it would retail for less than $100.
Most interesting of all was the announcement that the Essential 2 was in development. They did not provide any details on what stage of development they were in so it could still be in the planning stages. They did note that they were working on improving the reparability of the phone for the next model.
Of course, whenever a new phone comes out there are concerns that the older models may not be supported, but they confirmed that they would continue to support the Essential with software updates and security patches.
“We absolutely will be continuing to support the PH-1 device including security patches, more camera features and additional worldwide carrier support throughout the lifecycle of the PH-1 device,” they wrote. “We still have plenty of work, continued release milestones on the roadmap, and new features we want to deliver from the great feedback we get in these AMAs. We are looking forward to supporting you guys for a long time.”
The Essential currently retails for $499 though recent sales saw the price drop to $399.
