LTE Surface Pro Coming This December
Microsoft’s line of Surface tablets are great machines for getting work done away from your desk, but their portability has been hampered by the fact that in order to access the internet, the devices must be using a WiFi network. That will change this December as Microsoft is preparing to launch a line of Surface Pro tablets with LTE modems capable of offering 450MB of data.
Ars Technica reports that the Surface Pro with Advanced LTE will be available in two versions. Both will have Core i5 processors so the differences will be in terms of storage and RAM. One version will feature 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The other version will double those numbers offering 8GB of Ram and 256GB of storage space. Provided you have a phone network to connect to, these tables will offer download speeds of 450Mbps. In terms of availability, the modems feature support for 20 radio bands so they should work in most countries provided you have a valid SIM card.
One of the flaws of LTE devices is the fact that using LTE generally drains a device’s battery faster than connecting to WiFi. However, Microsoft has said that, provided you’re only using one kind of network at a time, battery usage should be even rather you’re using LTE or WiFi.
The Surface Pro line has always been aimed at the business community, but Microsoft is doubling down on this market with the LTE versions. The company says that it is targetting the “new culture of work” and estimates that, by 2020, about half of the workforce will be mobile workers meaning they’ll work from home, airports, coffee shops, on-site with clients and other places that aren’t a traditional office environment. While many of those places do offer WiFi, the reliability and security of such networks is questionable so LTE provides customers with a bit more security than a public WiFi network.
The LTE versions of the Surface Pro will go on sale December 1st and will cost $150 more than the standard versions. The 4GB version will cost $1,149 and the 8GB version will be $1,449.
