AMD Launches Mid-Range Ryzen 5 CPU Chips
Over the past several months, AMD has begun an aggressive push to recapture the desktop CPU market which is currently dominated by Intel. Last month, they launched high-end R7 line which was meant to compete with Intel’s Core I7. Now the company is expanding its sights to the mid-range market with the launch of their R5 line of CPUs. As with their higher-end models, the main advantage of ADM’s line over Intel’s is affordability and performance.
Ryzen is offering 4 chips in its R5 line which range in price from $169 to $249. The more affordable options are the quad-core Ryzen 5 1400 which retails for $169 and the slightly more expensive Ryzen 5 1500X which will cost $189. The remaining options are Ryzen’s six-core chips which include the Ryzen 5 1600 and the 1600X. These will cost $219 and $249 respectively. While these are within the same price range as Intel’s offerings, Ryzen says that their chips will be faster.
The most interesting one is the 1600X which is meant to compete directly with Intel’s Core I5-7600K. In this particular case, Intel’s offering is actually about $10 cheaper, but there are some differences that may make AMD’s offering more attractive to some consumers. The biggest being that the 1600x offers 12 threads compared to the 7600k’s four. Several reviewers have noted that the Intel’s chips did perform better in single thread tests, but AMD was superior when using multiple threads.
Regardless of these minor differences, the most interesting thing is that Intel finally has some competition which can only be a good thing for consumers. Competition brings out the best in products so regardless of whether you prefer AMD or Intel, you still benefit from AMD’s recent offerings.
In general, AMD fans have a lot to look forward to this year. In addition to the company’s CPUs, the high-end Vega graphics cards are expected to launch sometime this year so let’s hope the company can keep their momentum.
