HTC Vive Gets Viveport Subscription And Discounts
The HTC Vive is already turning a year old soon, whether your believe it or not, and to celebrate the moment for HTC and Valve, the two companies are rolling out discounts and a new subscription to Viveport. The reductions include a discount on the actual headset and a few free games. All of the promotions are there to entice anyone who hasn’t bought the headset yet.
On April 5th, a $100 discount will start to lure new Vive owners, but could also be a response to Oculus trimming a $100 off the Rift. Either way, it’ll make the Vive slightly more affordable. The Vive currently cost $799, but with the $100 discount, it’ll come out to $699. The price difference is a significant change, but the biggest deterrent for VR is still the price. Now, you’ll still need a high-performance gaming setup to run the Vive which could cost another $799 or more.
HTC Viveport subscription is the big announcement for Valve
The loudest announcement from the one year birthday is the Viveport subscription. The subscription is $6.99 a month and for five apps of your choice, you get unlimited access to those apps. At launch not every app will support the Viveport subscription, but developers might want to support it. The idea is to let users try the app for “free” and then possibly buy it if they like the app. Developers will also make additional income from a cut of the subscription. Valve says it’ll launch with support for 50 titles. You’ll get access (unlimited) to either five games or apps, and you can rotate them each month or keep them longer.
For current VIVE owners, signing up for your first month free is as easy as visiting viveport.com. There are some good deals for the Vive this month, including a free game. Vive owners can download the Arcade Saga game for free. The title is usually $19.99, so it’s great value for users.
