LG To Unveil New Virtual Reality Headset At Game Developers Conference.
After spending the past few decades as little more than a sci-fi plot point and one poorly executed Nintendo console, the dream of virtual reality is finally on the verge of coming to life. Currently, the biggest player is the Oculus Rift, but there are other alternatives that were unveiled at the Game Developers Conference. One of those was LG’s SteamWorks VR headset.
Valve originally worked with HTC to produce the Vive, but the Steamworks VR platform is open to other developers and LG is one of the first to take advantage of Valve’s offer. One of the benefits of working with Valve is that LG’s headset will be compatible with Steam’s software and their vast gaming library. This doesn’t mean that every Steam game will be VR-compatible, but it does give LG an advantage over the Rift.
We don’t have any details regarding the upcoming headset aside from the fact that it is a prototype and has been described as a next generation experience. Beyond that, we only have speculation. We currently do not even know the price or release date of the headset, but we’ll hopefully learn more at their event at GDC. Whether or not, LG will be able to compete with the Oculus Rift or HTC’s Vive remains to be seen, but more competition is always welcome.
