Boost Mode Brings Increased Stability and Performance To PlayStation Pro
In the coming weeks, Sony will release the PlayStation system update 4.50. This update offers many new features that will benefit all PlayStation 4 users, but there is one new feature that will be especially interesting if you own a PlayStation Pro.
Playstation Pro boost mode will allow even unpatched PS4 games to take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s extra power. Developers have already patched some PS4 games to allow them to take advantage of the Pro’s power, but this software update will apply to virtually every PS4 game save for a handful released very early in the console’s lifecycle. If you have a PS Pro then you can check out the feature for yourself by downloading the beta client of 4.5.
If you don’t feel like dealing with that, then Eurogamer released a breakdown of boost mode that sheds some light on the new update. The biggest difference that Eurogamer noted was an increase in framerate. Most games are locked into a certain framerate, either 30 or 60 frames-per-second, and boost mode won’t make them run any faster in that regard. A game that is locked at 30 FPS won’t suddenly hit 60 FPS no matter how much extra power you throw at it. That being said, there are some titles that have unlocked frame rate settings and those games did see an increase in FPS. However, even those games that had a locked framerate saw an increase in stability and performance.
One game that was particularly interesting was Assassin’s Creed: Unity which has been plagued with problems since its launch. The PS4 version rarely hit 30 FPS and even my PC had trouble running it on launch and it easily surpassed the recommended requirements. However, Boost Mode appears to fix a lot of the game’s problems of the PS4 with Eurogamer noting that it ran at a consistent 30 FPS for the majority of their tests.
Boost mode, along with the other features in 4.5, are currently available for testing through Sony’s beta program. The update is expected to go live within the coming weeks.
