BioWare Is Already Working On The Next Big IP
At the same time as Electronic Arts was predicting Mass Effect: Andromeda was going to sell three million copies in its first week, the publishing behemoth also announced that its developer BioWare is working on the next big thing, set to release in March 2018. This would mean that even before the latest Mass Effect is launched on March 21, EA is setting a new release date for a year later.
Bold words, indeed, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s the EA and BioWare combo. Though it may seem rushed to some, BioWare has done it before with parts of the Dragon Age series and rumor is that part of the reason for the poor Mass Effect 3 ending is that it all had to be done rather quickly.
This does make one wonder whether the new IP will be any good: very few details are known at the time of writing, except that it will be an action-adventure game with RPG elements. As BioWare is at its core an RPG studio, it’s curious that they would be working on anything that isn’t a role-playing game. This raises the question if having BioWare do something they haven’t done before is the way to go. Again, Mass Effect 3 was rejected by fans across the board when BioWare didn’t live up to its usual standards.
If BioWare has learned its lesson from the Mass Effect 3 fiasco will be seen on March 21 when Andromeda comes out. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see what announcements are made regarding the new game. The studio has promised to keep its audience in the loop regarding any developments, so hopefully within the next few months we’ll be able to form a clearer picture of what the venerable studio is bringing us in 2018.
