Seagate Is Getting Close To Releasing a 16TB Hard Drive
Solid State Drives are getting cheaper and increasing in capacity. However, there’s a limit as to how large an SSD can be while still managing to stay within a reasonable price range. If you need a large amount of storage at an affordable price, you’ll need to buy a traditional hard drive. Luckily for you, Seagate is working on a 16TB hard drive for your massive data storage needs.
Seagate wants 16TB and 20TB Hard Drives
According to a report from PCWorld, the largest capacity Seagate is currently producing is 10TB mechanical hard drive with a 12TB hard drive in the testing phase. They also want to ship 14TB and 16TB har drives over the next 18 months. According to the companies CEO Stephen Luczo, the feedback is positive so far. The drive for high-capacity hard drives is diminished, but still, a niche needs among enterprise clients and power-users on the consumer side.
The business customers and power users on the consumer side do make sacrifices when they opt for a hard drive over an SSD. Transfer speeds on traditional mechanical hard drives are vastly slower than they are on SSDs. While this is a pain point for customers, they’re willing to make the sacrifice for more storage. There are YouTuber’s storing massive amounts of video, there are photographers storing photos, and there are businesses with security cameras.
Seagate is pushing storage capacity forward at an accelerated pace that’ll give customers an alternative to SSDs which are mostly stuck at 512GB. There are higher capacity SSDs, but they’re high prices are not cost effective for customers with massive storage needs. In addition to having higher capacity hard drives available to the public, lower capacity hard drives will dip in price – making them even more affordable.
