Prey Release Date Announced
Fans of the FPS genre will be happy to know that Bethesda and Arkane have now confirmed their new title, Prey, will be available from May 5 onward. Up until yesterday, the Prey release date was still something of a mystery as the developer and publisher wanted to make sure they were launching a “flawless” title, without all the trouble Dishonored 2 experienced.
Accompanying the announcement is a new gameplay trailer that features some ominous foreshadowing of the story as well as some spectacular violence aimed at creepy, shape-shifting enemies. The game takes place aboard a space station where the player will have to evade the aliens that have invaded it, showing that the Prey in the title is, in fact, you. The trailer ends with the confirmed Prey release date as well as some pre-order information.
The pre-order bonuses consist of a specialist shotgun as well as some more generic extra items, such as medkits. A look at the Prey release trailer shows that players will have access to traditional weaponry, like shotguns, but also more futuristic stuff like a laser rifle and what looks like a kind of Half Life gravity gun, which should make for some diabolical combos as players scramble to get away from the creepy-crawlies that are pursuing them.
Prey shows some strong signs of having been inspired by the Alien franchise, though there is enough Dead Space thrown in, as well as Arkane’s signature look and feel, to make it a very original title. In an earlier statement, game developers said that they wanted to stay away from the FPS genre a bit, preferring to focus on the psychological development of the protagonist. With the Prey release date locked in, gamers now know when they can test these claims out for themselves.
