Microsoft Announces New Power Saving Features As Part of Creators Update
Microsoft is adding an interesting new feature to Windows 10. The latest Insider preview features a power slider that will allow users to make adjustments to their battery usage. In the current build of the previews, the slider is only an interface test available for users running 15104 of the preview build. The bar will move, but it doesn’t do anything. Microsoft says they wanted to test the user interface before they added the technical aspects.
This option apparently came as a result of a request from Microsoft’s manufacturing partners, but it should be a welcome addition for any notebook user. Anyone who uses a notebook on a regular basis has undoubtedly found themselves with a dying battery and no outlet in sight. Of course, whether you use this feature or not will depend on your circumstances. One of the company’s software engineers, Dona Sarkar, gave the example of gaming while on a long flight as a time when you’d be willing to sacrifice performance for longevity.
Every laptop you’ve ever used would come with some sort of battery saving feature, but this slider is unique in that it offers multiple settings and ways to configure your PC’s power consumption. Most laptops simply offer the default mode and a power-saving mode. The blog also mentioned that, in future updates, they would ensure that the slider was only available on machines that could actually benefit from it so you probably won’t be seeing it on your desktop.
That being said, not everyone who uses build 15104 will see the slider. Microsoft said they wanted to get build feedback from people who were not using it as well since, once the update goes live, there will be many users who will choose to not have the slider enabled.
The slider is just one of the ways in which Microsoft is working to improve users’ battery life. While the company did not go into detail, they said they would be unveiling a few more battery-saving features in the coming weeks.
