MediaTek’s New TSMC 10nm Chips: Everything We Know About Them
When it comes to 10nm chips we know that even big names like Intel are having a bad time, but things seem to be running a lot smoother when it comes to mobile chip manufacturers. MediaTek’s new TSMC 10nm chips have been announced. Yes, there is not a single chip, instead, there are two of them.
These 10nm chips have been built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. Reports claim that MediaTek’s new TSMC 10nm chips will be coming out soon. One of which is meant for the high-end smartphone market while the other one of MediaTek’s new TSMC 10nm chips is targeted at lower-end segment. Namely, Helio X30 and X35 respectively.
The details regarding MediaTek’s new TSMC 10nm chips are not clear at the moment but from what we can make out, it seems that the company will be mass producing the X30 chips by late 2016 or early 2017. That seems to be the plan so far.
Word has it that there could be another 10nm series coming out, which will target mid-range smartphones but nothing is certain at the moment and we are still waiting for more information regarding the matter. The first client to embrace the 10nm process by TSMC was Apple and now MediaTek is also on board.
We have also talked about AMD and GlobalFoundries, and how they are planning to skip the 10nm process altogether and go directly to the 7nm process. This will be some risky business but as is always the case, where there is high risk there is also high reward. The duo is supposed to release this new tech in 2018. So we will have to wait for a fair bit before we can see what the new technology has to offer in terms of economy and performance improvements.
