An AMD Zen SoC Could Be Opted For In The Upcoming Apple MacBook Pro
A few weeks back, we heard reports about AMD getting a huge win for their Polaris 10 GPUs. Reports claimed that the GPUs would be powering the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro laptops. Now there is even bigger news. Reports claim that we might be seeing the AMD Zen APU in the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro as well. Unlike Windows laptops, Apple has always stressed upon GPU performance when it comes to their MacBook Pro. We could see the AMD Zen APU in the form of a custom SoC or a regular variant depending on what the two companies agree upon.
Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake are not advancing as much as Apple would like them to. This could potentially allow AMD to sneak a deal for themselves. AMD could come up with a custom SoC design which would meet the requirements of Apple for their upcoming Apple MacBook Pro.
The combination of Polaris and HBM2 in an APU would be a major upgrade for the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro line, one that I think will be much appreciated. AMD would also be willing to put in the extra effort and cut their margins a bit in order to get this deal. Something Intel would not be considering to do.
Keep in mind that none of this is confirmed at the moment and you should still wait till there is confirmation from either AMD or Apple. This is a most likely an intelligent guess or a lead that is yet to be confirmed. We expect the refresh to come out late 2017 so we should get confirmation sometime mid-2017 if there will be an AMD-powered MacBook Pro.
I know that none of this is confirmed but this does make a lot of sense. I can see why Apple would be interested in going with team red this time around. What do you think about the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro?
