AMD Headquarters Shifting To Santa Clara After 47 Years

AMD Headquarters

The AMD headquarters has been in Sunnyvale, California for the last 47 years now but that is about to change as the headquarters is being shifted to Santa Clara. AMD has signed a long-term agreement with Irvine Company for a 220,000-square-foot building which will feature offices, a Whole Foods and very soon, about 2,000 apartments.

AMD has a history in Sunnyvale and I’m sure people will be sad because of their move. But you have to look ahead when you are playing the big game.

Bill Montague, AMD’s director of global real estate said:

One of the reasons is our footprint is pretty large at One AMD Place, it’s not as efficient we can achieve with the relocation. And the age of the (existing) site would have required a significant upgrade to renovate it.

Well, that is one reason why the AMD headquarters is moving. Plus it is a pretty valid one so you cannot argue there. The Irvine Company did acquire the previous AMD headquarters before this plan was made but the company claims that this has nothing to do with the new deal. Here is the remark about just that:

There was no consideration with them being the landlord. We were looking at sites that worked with our timing, and there were several. One of the criteria was we wanted to have our own building.

This move is happening at an interesting time. While AMD is facing off Intel at the CPU front and is doing the same with Nvidia but in the GPU segment. What does AMD have planned for this shift? We will soon find out.

AMD headquarters is going to take some time to complete but it is getting there. We will update you about the moving process once we get more news about the matter.
