Oculus Rift Tear Down Shows It Costs Less Than $200
I know companies charge premiums for their products and the same is the case with the Oculus Rift. Another great example of such a company is Apple. They too charge huge premiums for their devices. Oculus Rift tear down shows it costs less than $200.
This seems a little too harsh as the selling price for the product is more than double that of what it costs to make. I am sure people are going to be furious when this comes into common knowledge. This is a really bad business practice, one that has to stop. There are consumer laws in this day and age for crying out loud.
The Oculus Rift tear down is as follow:
- AMOLED display: $69
- Plastics, metal, hardware, other miscellaneous parts: $24.09
- Hardware makeup: $22.50
This brings us to the total of $115.59. Now I know this does not include the process of making the device and does not include the cost or marketing and advertising. This is a new product so the cost of advertising would be great but still even if you include those factors I still think that the retail price for the Rift is a bit too much. If it was on the $400 mark then that would be more acceptable.
I do not know what people will think about this Oculus Rift tear down and how the owners of the device will react but I am sure that this will not leave a positive effect. One of the competitors of the Rift is the HTC Vive. Although we do not know what the cost of making one is, I assume that the same can be said for that device as well. I am sure it does not cost as much to make as they are charging for it. This is still a speculation but we might find out soon enough.
