LiFi Real World Tests Show Wireless Speeds Up To 100 Times Faster Than Standard WiFi
LiFi, an alternate yet improved form of WiFi, is a bidirectional wireless communication technology that may be becoming a reality pretty soon thanks to an Estonian startup company called Velmenni. The company announced that they have carried out real world tests through offices and industrial areas of Estonia’s capital and the results have been amazing.
According to Velmenni, the LiFi technology they have been working on is so fast that it can send data at as much as 1Gbps speed, outperforming common WiFi connections by at least 100 times and also being faster than high speed fiber based internet connections.
“We are doing a few pilot projects within different industries where we can utilise the VLC (visible light communication) technology,” Deepak Solanki, CEO of Estonian tech company, Velmenni, told International Business Times.
While LiFi may sound amazing and the results do show it to be true, it has a severe limitation in the fact that it relies upon light/visible light communication similar to infra-red, thus rendering it useless when obstacles such as walls come in place.
There is however a glimmer of hope with its over reliance on light. According to Professor Harald Hass, the man behind the amazing creation, theoretically any light emitting device can be equipped with a chip to make it a LiFi emitter.
“All we need to do is fit a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities: illumination and wireless data transmission,” Haas said.
Obviously LiFi, given the development and setup costs, would probably not be implemented at a large scale for many years to come, it can be used alongside WiFi for a more efficient and secure (due to data transfer being cut off by opaque objects) networking solution.
