Microsoft Research Project Turns iPhone into a 3D Scanner in MobileFusion
Interesting stuff is happening all over the world, for instance there is this new Microsoft Research Project called MobileFusion where they converted an ordinary iPhone camera into something extraodianry i.e. a 3D scanner!
Not content with simply taking selfies with your phone? How about taking 3D scans of everything around you simply by moving your phone around the object – or person!
While this is just a research project as of now, I would certainly want this to be available on my iPhone.
Anyhow, researchers that include Oxford University PhD candidates among others, say that this allows them to take something that is just like a picture but is in fact a complete 3D object.
Now I am not saying that the technology Microsoft Research team has made is perfect, but hey they are using an iPhone 5S and I am sure APple didn’t add that camera in it for being used as a 3D scanner. So yeah, some of the rendered 3D scans are rough, but it is a good research.
Interestingly, they are using nothing but the Phone’s inbuilt hardware for it which is one step up from what Google is doing with a similar project called Tango. Of course the additional gadgetry needed for Tango is what will allow it to get better results than MobileFusion too.
That being said, check out the video embedded below to see what the Microsoft Research team members have achieved so far.
