Apple’s AirPower Charger Plagued With Issues, Will Possibly Be Canceled
It has been over a year since Apple first presented its wireless charging mat, the Apple AirPower. The AirPower is a product that’s supposed to charge both your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time – but has been facing manufacturing issues and delay after delay. A year later, mentions of the AirPower have gone silent and Apple can only tell us that the wireless charger is ‘coming soon’. It looks like that the product is plagued with issues, which explains the delay. In fact, the issues might be so severe that Apple has to start from scratch and cancel the release of the charger.
Some sources from The Verge report that Apple has to start from scratch and is considering canceling the wireless charger. It will likely work a new version and release it under the same name, although that could take a considerable amount of time.
There are a number of different problems, the main one of which is overheating. The design of the AirPower wireless charging mat uses multiple coils, which results in the temperature of the whole mat becoming too high for a normal operation and efficient charging of all products.
Aside from the overheating issues, it appears that there’s a problem with communication between the AirPower mat and the different devices as well. For example, the AirPower currently can’t measure the battery percentage of iPhones, AirPods and Apple Watches, meaning it doesn’t even know if the devices require charging or not. Aside from these severe issues, the mat is also facing with multiple smaller malfunctions and interruptions.
In other words, the future doesn’t look all that bright for the Apple Airpower, and it could be a while before we see a working product that resembles the one shown one year ago.
