Oppo Introduces Find X Smartphone With Camera Slider And Highest Screen To Body Ratio Yet
It appears the smartphone industry has found a new way to compete with each other, and it’s eliminating bezels and notches as much as possible. Oppo, a sister company of popular manufacturer OnePlus, has unveiled the Find X smartphone with the highest screen to body ratio yet, no notches and a mechanically retractable camera system.
The result of this ‘full-screen smartphone’, as Oppo calls it, is a whopping screen to body ratio of no less than 92.25 percent. For comparison: the Vivo NEX – another Chinese phone which has eliminated the need for a notch – offers a ratio of ‘only’ 91.2 percent. The sliding mechanic is similar, but the NEX only uses a mechanical slider for the selfie camera, whereas the Find X uses a slider for both the front and back snappers.
When a user opens up the camera app, the Find X smartphone will automatically activate the camera slider. According to the company, it only takes about 0.5 seconds before the slider is fully active, and you won’t be able to slide the camera out yourself. The front camera is also being used for biometric identification, as there is no fingerprint scanner located on the device or underneath the display. The operation seems to operate similarly to Face ID of the iPhone X, although it still remains unclear just how fast or secure Oppo’s facial recognition system truly is.
The screen of the device – without a doubt the main attraction – has a size of 6.4 inches with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Oppo has chosen an OLED panel and a Full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. The front camera has a resolution of 25 megapixels, while the back sensors feature resolutions of 16 and 20 megapixels for the primary and secondary snapper, respectively.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip forms the processing heart of the device, which is the company’s latest flagship offering. The system-on-a-chip will be accompanied by eight gigabytes of internal memory alongside 256 GB of storage.
Notably, Oppo has implemented an impressive fast charging solution in their latest flagship device. The 3730 mAh capacity battery can charge with Oppo’s VOOC technique, which is strikingly similar to that of OnePlus Dash Charge. Around 35 minutes of charging would suffice to completely replenish the Find X’s battery.
The Oppo Find X will ship with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, with Oppo’s Color OS skin on top.
For the first time in Oppo’s history, the company is also focusing on capturing the Western market alongside their native Chinese market. It looks like the Find X will be available in at least three different colors and carry a price tag of €999 – that will most likely translate to $999 in the United States because of added tax in Europe.
The company has stated that their notchless flagship device starts selling in August, with most of the European Union as confirmed launch countries. A release window for the UK or North America hasn’t been announced yet and will most likely be announced at a later date, although you could always import a Find X before the official US release.
For those who are willing to pay a premium for their Find X device, Oppo will also launch a Lamborghini edition of the phone with a unique exterior for a whopping €1,699.
