Here’s How Apple’s Slowdowns Affect iOS Apps and How Apple Could Resolve It
Apple has released a revised statement regarding their policy of slowing down older iPhones. The company promised that it has “never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product…” Beyond that, however, the company’s statement didn’t offer much in the way of new information regarding its policy.
On the other hand, we did get some information regarding how the throttling affects various iPhones. Some of the more obvious ones include iOS app issues such as slow apps, lower framerates while scrolling, and background apps requiring a relaunch in order to start properly. Given the fact that smartphone users rely heavily on apps to make the most of out of their smartphones, we imagine apps are one of the areas where users are most likely to notice the effects of throttling.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be much that Apple can do aside from offer replacement batteries. App makers could work to better optimize their iOS apps for older software, but that would require them to maintain multiple versions of the same app which could be become prohibitively expensive especially for smaller developers.
That being said, one option that Apple could offer is to make it easier to downgrade to older versions of iOS. Many users have reported that their troubles began after updating to iOS 11. Unlike Android phones, Apple products can be difficult to downgrade, but, in light of the circumstance surrounding Apple’s recent announcements, we think giving users more control over which version of iOS they want to use could be a good move.
Granted, this comes with its own set of problems. Not least of all is the fact that many app developers optimize their iOS apps for the latest version of the operating system, but users are already reporting app problems and slowdowns so they may not have much to lose.
