First SSD To Make Use of Silicon Motion’s Officially Announced Ahead of CES
In August of this year, Silicon Motion announced the first in its line of high-speed SM226x PCIe NVMe SSD controllers. The line will consist of four controllers which are aimed at different markets. The line includes SM2262EN, SM2262, SM2263, and SM2263XT. Today, Taipower announced the Mirage NP900 NVMe SSD which is the first consumer SSD to make use of one of Silicon Motion’s new controllers.
While we don’t expect this particular SSD to be widely available outside the Asian market, the Mirage NP900 does give us some insight into the SM2262 performance.
The SSD displayed sequential read speeds of 2685 MB/s and write speeds of 2685 MB/s in AS SSD benchmark tests though we’ll have to wait until the product is on the market before we can determine the accuracy of those results.
As previously stated, we don’t expect this particular SSD to be very popular outside of the Asian market, but it does give us a benchmark for other SSDs using this technology. With CES 2018 just around the corner, we expect to see Silicon Motion’s controllers used in SSDs manufactured by Intel, Sandisk, and other companies. We expect that at least a few of those companies will bring the SSDs to western markets.
