Samsung Unveils Its 8-nanometer Mobile Chips
South Korean electronics Samsung has announced that it has qualified its 8-nanometer chip-making process three months ahead of schedule. While these chips do use the same “low power plus” process used in the current 10-nanometer chips, that doesn’t mean these don’t represent an upgrade over the company’s current offerings. The company expects these new chips to be 10 percent smaller and 10 percent more energy efficient than the line of chips it is currently producing. However, since it uses the same process as its current chips, it says that it will be able to offer “a fast ramp since it uses proven 10nm process technology while providing better performance and scalability than current 10nm-based products.”
The company says that its new line of chips will be ideal for “mobile, cryptocurrency and network/server, and is expected to be the most attractive process node for many other high performance applications.” There had been rumors that Qualcomm’s next line of mobile chips would make use of Samsung’s upcoming 7-nanometer production chips, but ZDNet confirmed that was not the case. For now, at least, Qualcomm will make use of the 8-nanometer chips for the production of its next-generation mobile chipsets.
That being said, it’s not too surprising that Qualcomm is sticking with Samsung seeing as the company’s line of flagship smartphones remains one of the biggest outlets for the Snapdragon chips. We don’t expect Qualcomm to break away from Samsung any time oon.
One more thing worth noting is the fact that this development puts Samsung ahead of Intel in terms of chip sizes. Intel has not released a 10-nanometer chip yet. By the time, it does release a 10-nanometer chip, Samsung will likely be several generations ahead. Of course, it should be kept in mind that Intel and Samsung aren’t competing in the same space as Intel focuses on desktop chips as opposed to mobile.
