Recent Windows Update Causing Problems For Some Users
Tech Radar is reporting that a recently released update for Windows 10 is causing problems for some users. Some users are reporting that the update is causing the blue screen of death (BSOD error.) Some users are also reporting an infinite reboot bug.
The problem lies with the KB4041676 update to Windows 10. The issue was brought to Microsoft’s attention via the Microsoft answers message board. “My computer keeps restarting because windows update won’t install KB4041676,” the original poster said. Other users then reported that they were having similar problems with their PCs.
“ALL of the systems running 1703 blue screen upon reboot AFTER applying this patch (KB4041676). The message that comes up is INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE. After that, it reboots automatically, attempts to boot again, and then displays the ‘Automatic Repair’ screen. None of these systems make it past this message,” replied another user.
A Microsoft moderator reported that this issue was caused in some enterprise environments where some users installed “both the delta update and the cumulative update which shouldn’t have been pushed to WSUS [Windows Server Update Services] last night.”
While this would imply that home users don’t have anything to worry about, but a few users reported that they had run into this issue on their home PC.
‘I had this issue on my home PC. After Automatic Repair failed, I rebooted and hit F8 to get the boot options menu and booted into safe mode. Windows started to load, then crashed. Rinse and repeat (once, maybe twice). Windows booted properly into safe mode, restarted, finished installing updates, restarted at least once and loaded Windows normally.’
While Microsoft is likely working to address this issue, it does highlight one of the reasons that many users find automatic updates to be frustrating. Without giving users a choice in the matter, Microsoft runs the risk of causing problems such as this.
