Seagate Announces The BarraCudaPro 12 TB Hard Drive
As digital content becomes more and more prevalent, hard drive space is becoming an important factor when determining what programs to download, which files to keep and general computer use. Seagate has announced new versions of its IronWolf, IronWolf Pro, and BarraCuda Pro hard drives.
The Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro are designed for use with network-attached storage devices, but the BarraCuda Pro is meant for desktop PCs. The Barracuda offers 12TB of storage space and Seagate boasts that it is the “the fastest, highest-capacity and most reliable hard drive for desktop computing available on the market today.”
The hard drive makes use of Intel Optane memory which Seagate says will allow the device to operate with the reliability of a solid-state drive while being about twice as fast as standard drives. Seagate says that their device will offer sustainable transfer rates of 250MB per-second and burst speeds of 6GB per second.
Seagate says that the drive will work well for any general computing task, but placed particular emphasis on the drive’s ability to handle data storage. The company’s announcement boasted that the device can handle “any number of demanding data management needs from creative editing workflows to gaming to desktop computing. The drive’s high speed means that data-intensive activities like large file transfers and photo-editing are faster when using BarraCuda Pro.”
Unfortunately, all of this speed and power comes at a price and that price is $529. Those who are interested can find the BarraCuda Pro along with the IronWolf products available at Newegg or other retailers.
That being said, assuming the BarraCudaPro is as fast as Seagate claims, the price isn’t unreasonable. A search of the web reveals that 12TB hard drives tend to run the gambit from about $500 to around $700. So this might be a good option for those who need a fast and powerful hard drive.
