Microsoft Is Bringing Edge To iOS and Android Devices
Microsoft has announced that the Edge browser, which comes installed on any Windows PC, will soon be available for iOS and Android smartphones.
As with similar browser apps, the Edge app will allow users to access their Favorites, Reading List, New Tab Page and Reading View settings on their smartphones making it a bit more convenient to switch from their PC to smartphone.
The ease of transferring work from one Windows-based platform to another has been a hallmark of Microsoft’s efforts in recent years and the company is continuing that push with their Edge app despite neither Android nor iOS being Windows operating systems. With the Edge app, users will be able to seamlessly transition from smartphone to PC as the PC version of Edge will simply pick up where uses left off in the smartphone browsers.
As an extension of that idea, Microsoft also announced that it was working on a Microsoft launcher for Android smartphones. This launcher will give Android users access to their documents, photos and other files which will allow them to more easily transition between their smartphones and PC.
The Microsoft launcher is the most recent version of the Arrow Launcher and the company says that anyone who has the Arrow Launcher beta can test out the Microsoft Launcher today. Those who do not have the Arrow Launcher are also welcome to join the preview program.
As iOS does not allow users to customize the device’s launcher, this app will only be available on Android devices.
Viability of Edge
Based on what little we’ve seen of them, the Edge app and Microsoft Launcher appear to be decent-enough apps, but we doubt they’ll see too much use. The Edge browser simply isn’t as popular as Chrome or Firefox. Recent reports say that Edge only has a market share of little over four percent and it is unlikely that 100 percent of that four percent will change their smartphones browsers.
