Windows 10 S Will Lock Users Into Using Microsoft Edge And Bing
Microsoft recently unveiled their new OS meant for educational devices. Windows 10 S is a stripped down version of Windows 10 meant for Microsoft’s budget line of laptops. In short, think of it as Microsoft’s answer to Google’s Chromebook line. For the most part, it appears that the OS will do its job well enough, but there are a few issues with it.
One of the first things that you’ll notice when you boot up Windows 10 S is the fact that you’re locked into using Windows Edge as your default internet browser. You can download other browsers from the Windows Store, but Edge will remain the default app meaning that whenever you click a link or open an HTML file it will open in Edge.
On the topic of other browsers, it’s worth mentioning that you can only use apps that were purchased from Windows Store. This means that neither Chrome nor Firefox, which are two of the most popular browsers on the market, will be available on Windows 10 S devices. It’s always possible that Google or Mozilla could add their software to the Windows Store, but the inability of users to change their default browser make discourage the companies from making that leap.
It could be argued that Microsoft’s decision to lock the browser to Microsoft Edge is a security or performance-boosting feature, but the decision regarding search engines is a bit less defensible. Microsoft has announced that Bing will be the default search engine for the Edge browser and that users will not be able to change this. Google is currently the most popular search engine in Europe and North America so Microsoft’s decision is a frustrating one. Obviously, they would prefer people to use their own search engine, but Bing simply isn’t as well-trusted.
Overall Windows 10 S appears to be shaping up to be a decent competitor to the Chromebook line, but the decisions regarding Edge and Bing are odd ones.
