Apple May Unveil New Smartwatch With Micro LED Technology
While the Apple Watch hasn’t quite been the roaring success that Apple hoped, there can be no doubting that device’s display is very well-designed. Fans of Apple’s smartwatch will be glad to know that Apple isn’t resting on their laurels when it comes to smartwatches. In fact, it has been reported that the company is developing their own display system that will use micro LEDs as opposed to OLED.
While these reports are unconfirmed they do make sense when we consider the fact that Apple owns LuxVue, an energy-efficient LED company that they bought in 2014. Obviously, a more energy efficient display is great news for consumers since that means their device’s battery will last longer.
LuxVue has filed several patents relating to micro LED technology so a longer lasting battery isn’t all the next smartwatch might offer. One the more likely improvements that Luxvue has made is that their devices may simply last longer than competitors. Obviously, this is great news for anyone who doesn’t want to swap out their device every few years.
The most interesting thing about the upcoming Apple Watch is how the screen could be used. A patent from 2015 describes a “display panels, systems and methods of operation are described in which LEDs may be used for both emission and sensing.”
As of right now, we don’t know the specifics of Apple’s plans for their new watch, but there are a lot of ways in which the above technology could be used. For starters, it is possible that they could incorporate a Touch ID scanner into the screen.
Even if you aren’t interested in Smartwatches it is possible that Apple will use the smartwatch as a test phase for ideas to incorporate into their other products so it is worth paying attention to.
