Sennheiser Introduces Ambeo Smart Headset with 3D Audio Recording
Sennheiser has introduced the Ambeo Smart Headset, and according to the company, the Ambeo Smart is the first headset in the world that can record binaural 3D audio. The binaural audio recordings allow for a deeper three-dimensional experience, by placing the listener in the soundscape which allows for the detection of sound directions and it should also allow you to hear the spatial characteristics of a location.
For the development of the Ambeo, Sennheiser collaborated with Apogee, a manufacturer of professional audio equipment. The recordings use two omnidirectional microphones which are integrated into the earbuds, using a premium AD-converter, a microphone amplifier, and SoftLimit technology from Apogee. The two different microphones should allow the headset to record differences in timing, volume and sound tone whenever sound hits your ears from different directions.
The Sennheiser Ambeo Smart uses an Apple Lightning connector. The 3D Audio recording functionality will be compatible with all iOS devices that are equipped with a lightning port. The Ambeo will integrate with the standard iOS camera application, for a smoother recording process. After the sounds are recorded, the binaural audio can be listened to from a regular stereo headset as well.
Sennheiser has also built in the Transparent Hearing feature, which is a safety feature that allows the user to hear what’s going on in your near environment. The feature is adjustable with a built-in switch. According to Sennheiser, construction noises should be very limited due to the design of the ear shells.
The Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset will release in the summer of 2017 for iOS. Sennheiser has also announced an Android version of their binaural headset, which will release later this year.
