Stardock Won’t Support The Nintendo Switch, Says Third Parties Rarely Succeed
If you play games like Galactic Civilizations and Offworld Trading Company you likely know about Stardock. The games you’ve loved probably won’t come to the Nintendo Switch. The CEO of Stardock, Brad Wardell, told GamingBolt that in all likelihood, they won’t be supporting the Nintendo Switch. As the words “probably not” were spoken, it doesn’t give a whole lot of confidence to taking the games to Nintendo’s newest system. One of the reasons includes the lack of success stories surrounding Nintendo and their newest systems with third party developers.
The statement is huge coming from someone so ingrained in the gaming industry. While it’s true Nintendo hasn’t been supportive of their third party developers. The Nintendo Switch marks a turn for the decades-old gaming company. The Switch offers more tools and easier ways to port and builds their games for the hybrid console.
Nintendo is building dozens of first party games
The games available for the Switch as of now include mostly Nintendo games. There are indie games coming out each week, a goal Nintendo has touted often. Those games include ports from Android and iOS and other systems. They’ve mostly gone un-noticed, with most of the attention pointed towards Zelda and the upcoming Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Minecraft is coming along with EA’s sports games, but they’re still a long way off. We’re sill unclear how they’ll perform or even if customers want those games on the Switch.
If other developers like Stardock keep believing they won’t succeed on the Switch, it could spell bad news for the Switch. While Nintendo can keep releasing games for their platform, they cannot release on the release cycle they have. They’ll need third parties like EA and Stardock to fill in the holes. If we could see Call of Duty or other first person shoots on the Switch, that would be even better. Either way, Nintendo needs to help developers understand they’re committed to helping them succeed.
