HP Laptop Running Remix OS Seen At Hong Kong Event
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a rise in alternative operating systems. The market that was once dominated by Windows is, well, still dominated by Windows, but there’s more competition now than there has been in a long time. Google’s Chromebook line has become increasingly popular with students and other budget-conscious consumers. Other alternative operating systems do exist, but they’ve seen limited use though that might change in the future.
Reports out of China indicate that the company may be looking into alternative operating systems. An laptop by HP sporting the Remix OS based on the Android system was seen at Hong Kong Global Sources Fair. Given that HP has produced several Chromebooks, it is possible that the Remix device was merely a prototype for an upcoming Chromebook.
However, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this is the first in a new line of alternative OS-based laptops. The one seen in Hong Kong was at the Rockchip booth and featured the Elitebook branding, but there was no sign of the HP logo.
Interestingly enough, Notebook Italia who published the story initially, was asked to remove the article at Rockchip’s request. It is possible that the device was not meant to be shown to the public.
In terms of specs, the device featured Mali-T864 graphics, a Rockchip RK3399 hexa-core CPU and outputs everything on a 12.5-inch screen. The product also featured 64GB of onboard flash memory and 4GB of RAM.
The use of Remix OS is interesting in and of itself due to the fact that the OS is designed to be used on both your smartphone and laptop. As it stands, the Remix OS isn’t used on very many smartphones so it is unclear how much of a selling point the cross-platform functionality is. On the other hand, the lack of a Windows licensing fee could allow HP to make more powerful laptops for a lower price so that would certainly be of interest to some consumers.
