YouTube TV Goes Live In Five U.S. Markets
Yet another rival has emerged to challenge Netflix’s dominance of the streaming market in the form of Youtube TV. That being said, Youtube TV is really more of a challenger to Comcast and other cable providers than it is to Netflix.
Whereas Netflix offers a wide selection of movies and TV shows, Youtube TV offers 40 channels including the five main broadcast networks: Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, and the CW. The fact that Google managed to work out contracts with the five major broadcasting companies is what really sets this service apart from other streaming services. It is, currently, the only streaming service to provide access to these networks so if you happen to enjoy them then that’s a point in Youtube TV’s favor.
Another strong point in the service’s favor is the number of sports channels it features. Sports have been a mainstay of cable and satellite providers and arguably one of the main reasons that users continue to subscribe to such services. However, now that Youtube TV is offering access to ESPN and several other sports network, it makes cord-cutting a much more attractive option for sports fans.
All in all, Youtube TV currently offers 40 channels for $35 a month. In addition, users may add Showtime and Fox Soccer Plus for an additional monthly fee.
Of course, there is a small catch to this convenience and that’s the limited availability. Youtube TV is currently only available in five markets: San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The company has said they plan to expand into other regions as time goes on. However, part of the problem comes from the fact that they will need to negotiate rights with broadcasting affiliates so it could take some time.
Due to these location restrictions, customers will not be able to watch live TV outside of those five markets. However, Youtube TV does offer a cloud-based DVR service and recorded shows will be available anywhere.
