Apple’s iPhone 6s Was The Best Selling Smartphone of 2016
According to data compiled by market research firm IHS Markit, Apple’s iPhone 6s was the best-selling smartphone of 2016 beating out rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S7 and even Apple’s own iPhone 7.
The data shows that the iPhone 6s shipped 60 million units in 2016 with the iPhone 7 coming in second place with 50 million units and the 7plus taking third place with more than 25 million units shipped. Samsung’s Galaxy 7 came in fifth place having shipped 25 million units.
IHS released a statement regarding their figures where they commented on Apple’s continued success in the global market. They stated that Apple has shown that their iPhones provide enough new features and innovations to fuel sales and help them remain successful. They’ve also done well in selling older model phones.
While Apple may have claimed the first few spots on the list and dominated the high-end market, Samsung’s line of mid-range smartphones ensured that they claimed five spots on the top 10 list of best selling smartphones. A large part of this success was due to their J series line which they have aimed at emerging markets.
This data provides a snapshot of the smartphone market today. Apple defined the pubic’s perception of a smartphone and leads the way in terms of emerging markets, but Samsung’s diversity has actually ensured that they are the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world.
