Samsung To Unveil Foldable Smartphone Later This Year
Korea’s ET News has reported that Samsung will unveil their long-awaited foldable smartphone later this year with a launch date of sometime next year.
Samsung will reportedly show off the phone to its partners later this year. Assuming they agree that there is a market for the phone, the plan is to release it sometime in 2018.
Rumors of Samsung’s foldable smartphone have been circulating for years. Samsung showed off the concept in an ad during CES 2013, but beyond that we’ve seen no evidence of the phone’s existence.
There have been several theories as to how the phone would actually function. Some have speculated that it would come with a hinge that would allow you to simply fold phone up when you’re not using it. More interesting are the theories that the phone would actually be able to expand into a seven-inch tablet.
Both of the aforementioned designs have been hinted at via patents that Samsung has filed so we know that they have the technology to produce a foldable device.
The current obstacle seems to be a matter of marketability. As neat as foldable tech seems, it is an untested market so it is understandable that companies would be wary of investing a lot of money into a product that may simply fall flat.
