iPhone 8 May Feature Wireless Charging
After the tentative release date for the iPhone 8 leaked a few days ago, the Internet has been abuzz with rumors surrounding the new smartphone to come from Apple. Though features remain largely a mystery, together with the official release date — Fall 2017 has been mentioned, but remains unconfirmed — one exciting new possibility has been offered up today: there is a change that the new iPhone will have the ability to charge wirelessly.
For those not in the know, the wireless power consortium — a group to which big-name companies like Samsung and LG belong — has developed a system where consumers can place a smartphone or tablet onto a special device which then allows it to charge without a mini-USB or Lightning connector anywhere in sight. Though this technology has been around for a while, only in the last few years has it become cost-effective and therefore interesting for manufacturers.
Apple is not a member of the wireless power consortium, or at least it wasn’t until recently, when the company is rumored to have joined. Whether this means that the new iPhone will allow for wireless charging remains to be seen, but it makes sense as Apple does always like to be in the vanguard when changes are afoot, like with the wireless headphones that caused quite stir a few months ago. The charging plates that consumers need to forego using a power cord are not exactly cheap, so it’s likely that it may just be an optional feature.
As the new iPhone is at this juncture mostly speculation, we’ll have to see whether or not wireless charging will be a feature or not; currently, this news stands be buried under an avalanche of rumors that most probably is coming our way in the next few months regarding the new Apple handset. Whether it will make the final cut is something only known to the people in Cupertino.
