Meet The Acer Predator 21 X, A $9,000 Gaming Laptop
The Acer Predator 21 X is definitely not like your daddy’s laptop. In fact, weighing in at 20 lbs (19.4 lbs to be exact), it is 4 to 5 times heavier than your average laptop. But let’s take a look at why it’s so heavy.
Acer Predator 21 X: Highlights
- 21-inch, curved display
- Four speakers
- Two subwoofers
- Mechanical RGB keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches
- Two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 video cards
- Intel Core i7-7820HK processor (7th gen)
- Five system fans
- Two power supplies
This Thing Is Big
The first thing that jumps out here is the fact that this gaming rig includes two GeForce GTX 1080s. Each card measures 10.5” in length and 4.376” in height. Put those two under a mechanical keyboard and you can already start to imagine the girth of this thing. And on top of it all, they have a 21-inch, 120Hz, 21:9 aspect ratio screen with a max resolution of 2,560 x 1,080. Also, due to the nature of the high-end graphics cards, two power supplies are needed.
Running the show is Intel’s latest processor, the 7th-gen Kabe Lake Core i7-7820HK CPU. Helping it run is 64GB of DDR4-2400 RAM, five fans, and nine heat pipes to keep everything running cool. The six-speaker audio system features 4 speakers, 2 subs, and Dolby® Audio. There’s not much information in terms of storage, but it is capable of housing a 1TB HDD and up to four additional 512GB SSDs in RAID 0.
The keyboard uses Cherry MX brand Brown switches and it has a nifty feature with the numpad. It’s actually removable, and reversible. No mouse available? No problem! Just turn the numeric keypad around and you’ll find the 21 X’s trackpad. Every key is RGB backlit, even the numpad, but the numpad won’t have those Cherry switches.
There’s four USB 3.0 slots (2 on each side), a headphone jack, a microphone jack, and an SD card reader. On the back of the unit you will find a Gigabit Ethernet connection, Thunderbolt 3, two Displayports, and an HDMI 2.0 port.
Touted as the first notebook in the world with a curved screen when it was announced at the end of August in 2016, getting your hands on a Predator 21 X won’t be cheap. To own a piece of history, you’ll have to spend more than on some used cars with a price tag of $8,999 USD.
