According To DOOM Dev 4K Console Gaming Is A Waste Of Resources
The PS4 Pro just came out and it can run games at 4K and the Microsoft Xbox Scorpio claims to be even more powerful than that. But a Doom developer seems to think that 4K console gaming is a waste of resources on the upcoming Project Scorpio and I think that he might be onto something here.
Locked FPS has always been a problem when it comes to console and as we have seen with the PS4 Pro the tradeoff between better graphics and FPS is still there. Some games actually run worse on the new console. So that brings up the question, Do we really need 4K console gaming? I mean we are hardly hitting 60 FPS at medium setting anyways.
id Software’s Lead Renderer Programmer thinks that instead of playing games at 30 FPS, medium settings on a higher resolution players should have the option of playing games with all settings maxed out at 1080p, 60 FPS. He believes that 4K console gaming on the Project Scorpio is a waste of resources.
In a tweet he said:
“yes, even more on on tvs/consoles where player sits at distance. 4K is a waste of resources”.
While Xbox team has cleared it out that the power of the Xbox Scorpio will be in the hands of the developers. To do as they seem fit. Developers will decide whether they go for lower FPS and higher resolution or higher FPS lower resolution with better graphics at 1080p.
While 4K console gaming may not be ideal for id Software’s Lead Renderer Programmer the power is still there for him to decide what to do with the resources of the Xbox Scorpio and with the great idea that he has had I am sure that he can pull this off in the future.
“but good to see ppl looking into approaches to decouple costs, that’s the good approach imo”.
I think that this is a great idea and that he should work on this when the console comes out. I am sure that many people will appreciate this feature on the upcoming console and the Xbox Scorpio would be a better option to choose from if this option came with other AAA titles.
But then again you have the PC for that, don’t you? Why buy a console that does what the PC is supposed to do already?
What do you think about 4K console gaming? Would the Xbox Scorpio seem like a better product if games came with the option we talked about?
