Does The Apple iPhone 7 32GB Have Much Slower Built-in Storage?
Storage on the iPhone has always been a huge issue for the higher storage models to come at a significant price premium and Apple is often criticized for this practice. Now that Apple has doubled the onboard storage on all their iPhone models we can thank God that we have more room to store our apps, games, music, pictures, and videos. But what if I told you that the storage on the basic Apple iPhone 7 32GB is actually slower than the other higher storage variants? Would that change your mind?
The new iPhone comes with the options of 32GB, 128GB or 256GB of built-in storage. The iPhone 7 costs £599 and you are expected to pay an extra £100 for more memory. The same is the case for the plus model which starts at £719. The model selection is a huge commitment as you cannot insert an SD card and expand the memory like you would normally do in other phones. Another reason why Apple is criticized for its practices.
GSM-Arena has tested the Apple iPhone 7 32GB and what they have found is that the storage on the Apple iPhone 7 32GB is actually 8x slower in disk operations as compared with 128GB of storage. Basemark OS II benchmark and Pass Mark were used to assess the storage performance of the following devices:
- Apple iPhone 6s Plus 64GB
- Apple iPhone 7 128GB
- Apple iPhone 7 Plus 32GB
The following is their finding:
|Storage test||Apple iPhone 6s Plus 64GB||Apple iPhone 7 128GB||Apple iPhone 7 Plus 32GB|
|Basemark OS II Memory||1422||1721||839|
|PassMark Disk Mark||54557||69616||43668|
|PassMark Storage Write||200.6Mbyte/s||308Mbyte/s||39.6Mbyte/s|
|PassMark Storage Read||628Mbyte/s||926Mbyte/s||691Mbyte/s|
|5min 4K video copy||1:00min||0:17min||0:52min|
As you can see from the numbers, the double storage is not necessarily a plus point on the Apple iPhone 7 32GB as the storage speed is actually worse than that of previous generation models. What do you think about the Apple iPhone 7 32GB storage speed?
