Raspberry Pi Pixel: Desktop Operating System Environment Built on Debian
Raspberry Pi Pixel is the new desktop OS environment that has been built on Debian. This is a clever name as stands for Pi Improved Windows Environment Lightweight. The OS features a single splash boot screen along with some new features.
It may have taken two years, and that is a very long time, but Raspberry Pi Pixel will be shipped with every Raspian as of now. There have been some small changes like a couple of wallpapers have been added along with a hand full of icons.
The biggest change that we have seen is the browser, Epiphany is the first version of Chromium that works on the Raspberry Pi Pixel.
Raspberry Pi Foundation founder Eben Upton said in a statement:
I don’t expect to have any issues with Google. It’s a very generic name, and is in a very different space (software versus hardware for starters) from what they’re doing.
Raspberry Pi Pixel is an odd name for a product right now as Google has already introduced the hybrid Pixel C tablet and the company has also announced a Pixel smartphone that will be coming out soon. So why the guys behind the new Raspberry Pie went for such a name? I really am not sure.
