Nvidia Xavier SoC Is A New AI Supercomputer For Cars
Nvidia is trying to get into the automated car technology. In this attempt, the company showed the Nvidia Xavier SoC at the GPU Technology Conference Europe. The Nvidia Xavier SoC is a beast and is capable of performing 20 trillion operations per second. You would imagine that something of this caliber would take a load of power but that is where you would be wrong. The TDP for the Nvidia Xavier SoC is 20 watts. So you can see why this is such a huge deal.
The new system-on-a-chip is designed so that it functions as the AI brain of the car. This comes in handy when we take self-driving cars into consideration. Something companies today are trying to perfect. This could be the future in the making. The Nvidia Xavier SoC is made on the 14nm process and it can replace the DRIVE PX 2 in-car computer, which the company is currently using. Not to mention that it will be more efficient and less power hungry as well.
Although this is a huge development and Nvidia sees this new technology being used in self-driving cars by researchers, startups and other firms should not expect to see this anytime soon. Nvidia has said that they will start pushing out samples by Q4 in 2017. So that is a long wait.
Nvidia is also working alongside TomTom in the efforts of providing localized mapping data in real time. The company’s very own AI-based self-driving research vehicle was always shown off at the event.
It seems that Nvidia is working to get a share in the autonomous driving and that the company might want to re-brand itself towards a more autonomous car technology company instead of just a GPU maker. This is all that we have for now.
