Nvidia NVLink 2.0 Will First Appear In Power9 Servers In 2017
Nvidia NVLink has already started coming out and we now have a successor to this technology as well, the Nvidia NVLink 2.0. Power9 chip by IBM coming out soon will feature this new Nvidia NVLink 2.0 technology.
Nvidia has not announced yet when GPUs with this technology will be out yet so we are guessing that other GPUs with this new technology will be made available around the same time the Power9 comes out. But that is a speculation.
Power9 servers will be coming out in the middle of 2017. Each NVLink 2.0 lane in the Power9 server will have a transfer rate of 25Gbps, which is 7-10 times faster than what you get over PCI-Express 3.0. IBM states that Power9 will have multiple Nvidia NVLink 2.0 lanes in order to take full advantage of this new technology.
GPUs and server technology will still be able to take advantage of the massive transfer rate that the link provides. This will save time for corporations and help them work faster and effectively. The Tesla P100 is based on the Pascal architecture and used the Nvidia NVLink. When Nvidia Volta comes out and replaces this architecture, we will see improved performance.
Nvidia NVLink 2.0 will play an important role when it comes to GPU driven applications looking for high bandwidth. Right now, Nvidia NVLink 2.0 is only designed for Nvidia products. If we know how Nvidia works then we can assume that this is going to stay that way.
We will know more about this new technology as the new year comes closer. Mid of 2017 is the mark you all should be looking out for if you want to learn more about the Nvidia NVLink 2.0. Till then all we can do is wait and see what Nvidia has to offer.
What do you think about this new technology? Let us know.
