DDR5 RAM Will Be Here By 2020, Specifications Being Worked On
There was a time when DDR4 RAM was really expensive but as time has passed, it is easily accessible and there is not a big difference between DDR3 RAM and DDR4 RAM. Now, it seems that we will be seeing something new hit the market. I can’t say that it will be coming out soon because 2020 is about 3 years away but DDR5 RAM will be coming out by then and we are waiting on what it will feature and what kind of specs we can expect from this new DDR5.
We can expect DDR5 RAM to have higher limits. When it comes to DDR4, we are limited to 128GB but DDR5 RAM could lift up these limits in favor of better performance and higher bandwidth. This upcoming DDR5 RAM will initially be coming out for servers and could come out for consumer-grade desktops and laptops later on. Expect a 12-18 month gap nonetheless.
Director of DRAM and Memory at research outfit IHS, Mike Howard said the following:
“The incumbent always has tremendous inertia. The DDR incumbent will keep rolling by the virtue that it’s there.”
He says that we can expect a couple of changes in these few years as DRAM is such a huge market. One that companies would love to cater to even more. But in order for these companies to be on board, they need to know that their investment in new memory tech will pay off. This is one of the reasons why Hybrid Memory Cube and High-Bandwidth Memory are not mainstream yet.
Companies need to be sure of what they are putting their resources into and sometimes figuring that out can be very tricky especially when it comes to new technology.
“A lot of the DDR5 development gets back to the shortcomings for DDR4”
What we can take away from this statement is that the next-gen DDR5 RAM will improve upon DDR4 and that is all we need to know for now. More when we have specifications to share with you call.
