PlayStation Neo Might Not be Able to Achieve 4K After All
Digital Foundry took the PlayStation 4 and installed an AMD Polaris 10 GPU into the console (PlayStation Neo of sort) to see what the effects would be and what they found was not so shocking. The custom console did run games fine at 1440p but things got more complicated at the 1800p mark which means that 4K is never going to happen with such a configuration.
All this was done to replicate the performance of the upcoming PS Neo, which is rumored to have AMD Polaris 10 GPU on board. Looking at the findings here it is hard to take Sony’s claims seriously. Sony claims that the PlayStation Neo will run games at 4K and after all that we have heard and seen it seems unlikely that the console will be able to achieve that kind of high resolution with such a configuration alone.
It seems that the minimum performance that will be possible with the console and which will be acceptable to the gaming community will be 1080p and game developers will have to choose how high exactly they are willing to take the resolution for particular titles.
This also means that there will be a trade-off between resolution and how smooth the game runs at that selected resolution as both cannot be achieved at the same time, at least not with these specs.
While some gamers do prefer a higher resolution in games I believe that majority of the gamers out there will be more than happy to compromise on the resolution of the game and have a good 60 FPS in a game rather than the other way around. Having said that I think that people would be happier playing a game at 1080p at 60 FPS rather than at 4K at 30 FPS.
FPS may not be all that important for console gamers but it matters a lot to people that do all their gaming on a PC. It seems that Polaris 10 is not the option that will allow Sony to achieve the 4K resolution that they talked about. This is not surprising as the Polaris 10 GPUs are meant for mainstream gaming and not for high-end stuff. But I doubt that even the high-end GPUs will be able to deliver 60 FPS at 4K.
