Overclocking AMD RX 480 to 1.4GHz May Not Be Possible
AMD claimed that with their new GPU overclocking tool users will be able to overclock AMD RX 480 to the max with ease, in order to get the most out of what they paid for. While we saw some reviews and tests showing that you can get a 1.5 or 1.6 Ghz overclock out of the AMD Radeon RX 480, this new information states the exact opposite. Overclocking AMD RX 480 to 1.4GHz may not be possible.
PCGamesHardware have had their take of overclocking AMD RX 480 and they could not get to 1.4 GHz no matter how much they tried. According to other reviewers, it is hard overclocking AMD RX 480 beyond the 1350Mhz point and the highest recorded clock speed till now is 1379MHz.
Interestingly XFX is overclocking RX 480 at 1328MHz out of the box. This does mean that there is room for improvement and that some people will wait for the custom cards that will come out soon after the launch. We were also hinted about beast mode cards that will have additional power connector for more power.
With more power, dual connectors and improvements to the board, we might see a 1.5 GHz overclock after all. So do not lose all hope just yet. We have not seen everything and the GPU has not even been officially launched yet.
There is a fair chance that sometime down the line there will be a custom design that will allow you to go beyond the power limitations of the reference design just like we saw with the GTX 1080 and 1070. Where all custom card design turned out to out-perform the reference design.
Less than a day to go until launch. Some places are offering pre-orders too. We will have plenty of people lining up to get this GPU first. YouTubers especially. Let’s see what people have to say about the card when it comes out. A few hours to go.
