GeForce GTX 1080 3 & 4-way SLI Configuration Won’t Require an Enthusiast Key
At the launch of the series 10 GPUs by Nvidia the company recommended only 2-way SLI and people were told that if they wanted Tri or Quad SLI for their GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 they would require a special enthusiast key. It turns out that Nvidia is now backing away from this statement and that there will be no enthusiast key for GeForce GTX 1080 3 & 4-way SLI.
For all those people that bought a couple of these cards, tough luck. GeForce GTX 1080 3 & 4-way SLI will only be for select applications that means that now would be the time to return some of those cards.
If you are a hardcore gamer then you are only going to need 2-way SLI for your GTX 1080. Nvidia is stressing on 2-way SLI and trying to make it a standard.
Previously you needed an enthusiasts key in order to get a GeForce GTX 1080 3 & 4-way SLI configuration, at least in theory. Now it seems that Nvidia is giving up on the idea and according to them you will not need the enthusiast key at all. Further more only a few applications will support such a configuration. This is bad news for gamers. If you think you can still use those cards to play Ashes of the Singularity then you are wrong. The title only supports 2-way SLI at this time.
Though Nvidia is stressing a lot on their new SLI bridges we do hope to see some way of getting more of GeForce GTX 1080 3 & 4-way SLI. The extreme PC gamers would love to have such a configuration on board to have the most powerful GPU configuration possible today. Nvidia might give us this option later on, you never know. But for right now we are pretty much stuck with 2-way SLI for the GTX 1080 and 1070.
