AMD Has Released Video BIOS Update for R9 Fury Series, Offers Better UEFI Support
AMD has released video card BIOS update for Radeon R9 Fury X and Radeon R9 Nano graphics cards, with improved UEFI support.
For those who don`t know, UEFI is a relatively new standard in motherboard firmware that replaces the classic BIOS firmware standards. UEFI offers features like full color and high resolution GUIs, PCIe SSD booting, smart hardware monitoring mouse and flash drive support and more. It is essential in Secureboot and Fast boot features of Win 8, 8.1 and 10.
If every device on the system is compliant to the UEFI firmware then UEFI motherboard can disable a feature called compatibility Service Module (CSM) to get the fastest possible boot on Windows.
To obtain fastest boot, GPUs have an interesting position. Loading a GPU with UEFI compliant firmware makes them incompatible with motherboards that still run on BIOS firmware. These motherboards will never boot in these configurations.
If we boot a GPU with a Legacy BIOS compliant firmware then motherboard with BIOS firmware can boot the GPU. However, UEFI motherboards has to enable CSM to interpret and run Legacy GPU BIOS which causes GPU to boot slowly.
Now, if we boot GPU with a hybrid firware which is compatible to both UEFI and BIOS then it is no problem for UEFI motherboards; however, older motherboards with BIOS might not be able to read the hybrid code and do not boot.
So AMD has released video card BIOS update for its graphics cards which means, if you update your graphics card’s BIOS then you will get fast boot times and other features on UEFI motherboards.
AMD is already shipping its graphics cards with UEFI compliant firmware and distributing its firmware as ROM images. Before you update your GPU firmware, research it thoroughly as it requires extensive knowledge to flash your graphics card BIOS.
