Intel Showcases Its 3D XPoint Optane Tech, File Transfer at 2GB/s
Intel Developer Forum 2016 took place in Shenzhen, China. During this event, Intel gave an on-stage demo of its 3D XPoint Optane technology.
Intel VP for non volatile memory solutions Rob Crooke showcased Intel Optane technology installed in the Thunderbolt 3 device. They demonstrated the tech by comparing the results with TLC-based SSD based systems. If reports from Tom`s Hardware are true then Optane technology has an evolutionary advantage over SSD drives.
They used a PC with an Intel SATA SSD and Thunderbolt 3 which also had a SSD connected to it. A movie was transferred from host PC to Thunderbolt 3 and the transfer speed was somewhere approximately 300 MB.
Later, they demonstrated another PC with Optane SSD drive in both host PC and Thunderbolt 3. They again transferred the movie and this time they got transfer speed of approximately 2 GB.
In the image above, you can see that evolutionary advantage that Optane technology holds over SSD drives almost 6 times more speed than the SSD drives.
If you consider this on-stage demo of Optane technology applicable in every day life tasks then it is incredibly amazing. This could mean that you can make your system boot faster than smartphones and tablets.
