Side by Side Comparison of GDDR5, HBM and HBM2 Revealed
There once was a time when computers were so big, that they occupied an entire room. But with the discovery of semi-conductors, the size of the computers and their chips started to decrease, and it’s still decreasing.
For those who don`t know, SK Hynix is a South Korean memory semiconductor supplier of dynamic, random access memory (RAM) and flash memory chips. They are the same people behind the development of HBM and HBM2.
SK Hynix has released a picture of side by side comparison of GDDR5, HBM and HBM2. Which reveals that HBM2 has a lot of capacity for its size when compared to the old memory standards.
In the side by side comparison in the image below, we can see the size of 8GB GDDR5 memory compared to 1 GB of HBM memory and 4GB of HBM2 memory. It is clear that HBM has huge capacity for its size compared to GDDR5 memory, while HBM2 has 4x more capacity compares to HBM.
HBM also offers better performance than GDDR5, while consuming less energy, which is the perfect memory standard in every way.
Now, imagine that AMD R9 Fury X has a total of 4GB memory, and SK Hynix has managed to fit that kind of memory power in a single chip of HBM2 . This is leading to the future where a single GPU can hold 16GB of VRAM.
Samsung has announced that they will be producing 8GB HBM 2 chips this summer. HBM 2.0 not only has more size capacity compared to HBM, but also gives 2X performance, which could be very attractive to the GPU manufacturers.
As to our knowledge, the first GPU using HBM2, Nvidia Tesla P100, will be available in the first quarter of 2017.
