Xbox One Upgrade and PlayStation 4.5 Planned for H2 2016, AMD’s Earnings Call Suggests
The rumor mill is currently churning with the chatter that hardware upgrades for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are just around the corner. Last month at a Microsoft press event, we heard Xbox boss Phil Spencer saying that the Xbox One will soon receive upgrades that would boost its performance. A few weeks after Spencer’s bold statement, rumors relating to an alleged PlayStation 4.5 (or PS4K) started making rounds on the web.
Rumor has it that the PS4K console will be equipped with a much faster GPU, with 2x the performance of the one contained in the standard PS4. It wasn’t revealed exactly how fast the GPU is, but is expected to run at a higher clock speed while being much smaller in size than the original.
Amidst these hardware upgrade rumors, a Reddit user by the name of Ener_Ji decided to dig into AMD’s most recent Q4 2015 Earnings Call Transcript to see if he could find any clues for new console SKUs. Well, his efforts didn’t go in vain as he managed to get a few hints pointing towards upgraded Xbox One, PlayStation 4K, as well as Nintendo NX – which seem particularly compelling in light of the above rumors.
AMD’s console business is part of their EESC (enterprise embedded and semi-custom) segment. Referring to the EESC segment, AMD talks about “new semi-custom business” in the second half of 2016. The chip maker expects sales of gaming consoles going up in 2016, thanks to “some new design revenue” and even “new products.”
Here’s an excerpt from AMD’s Q4 2015 earnings call:
In our EESC segment, we had record shipments of our semi-custom SoCs powering the Playstation 4 and Xbox One game consoles.
Demand for game consoles looks strong for 2016 and we remain on track to generate additional revenue from new semi-custom business in the second half of 2016.
Game consoles — we see units going up 2016 to 2015. We’ve also said in the enterprise embedded and semi-custom segment that we will be ramping some new design revenue in the second half of 2016.
We have new products being introduced in both the businesses with the new design wins in the second half on the semi-custom side.
We know that AMD is already a supplier of the APUs used in current generation consoles. Considering their experience in the APU sector, it comes to no surprise that they have plans to provide new semi-custom parts that will be launching in the second half of 2016.
