Reality Check! The Supposed Playstation 4.5 Won’t Provide Native 4K Gaming
Even if Sony Playstation 4K or Playstation 4.5 turns out not to be a sham – as suggested by multiple publications – it will hardly be enough to run games at 4K and 60 frames per second.
Contrary to popular belief, as noted by SegmentNext; the Playstation 4.5 is hardly going to run native 4K gaming. Since it is nearly impossible to provide native 4K gaming in the form factor and the price of the supposed console, Sarmad of SegmentNext notes that it will simply ‘upscale’ the images.
When it comes to rumoured specifications of the supposed Playstation 4.5; reports are speculating it to be based on 14nm process which AMD is using for Polaris. The new process will basically allow the company to use cheaper and more power efficient dies either to cut cost or enhance performance.
While the original Playstation 4 has graphics card equivalent to AMD Radeon 7870 based on GCN 1.1 version, the new hardware bump might see the jump to Polaris with GCN 1.3/4.0. Although still not sufficient for playable 4K gaming experience, this may result in 1080p/60FPS or higher. In addition to this, Playstation 4.5 is also rumoured to bring HDMI 2.0 support which will be first for a home console.
With all said and done, in case you are rooting for native 4K gaming, you might be in for a little disappointment! Currently a high-end gaming PC is the only viable option when it comes to 4K gaming at 60 frames per second.
