Star Wars’ Future is in VR and AR with Holo Cinema and Similar Projects
Star Wars is not only here to stay but grow bigger and better. Lucasfilm Story Group is already setting the bar at augmented reality and virtual reality experiences at their ILM x LAB.
At the recent Sundance Film Festival they showed off a new way of telling stories from a galaxy far, far away, something that they are calling the Holo Cinema. Just as the name’s likeness with HoloLens suggests, this is an augmented reality experience that literally takes you in the virtual world.
By presenting the visuals everywhere around you and using 3D head tracking to sync it with your point of view, it gives a whole new way of watching Star Wars.
Tatooine, the forest moon of Endor, Hoth, the Death Star… you name it and the Holo Cinema will take you there. Just to give you an idea of how the Holo Cinema will feel like when you are in it, check out the two very short demos below. But keep in mind that this type of experience cannot be fully demonstrated in a video alone.
Where’s the virtual reality part, you might ask since this is augmented reality. Well, the rest of the projects that ILM is working on relate to virtual reality but Lucasfilm did not share any details on those.
It is expected, however, that we will get many Star Wars based VR experiences in the next couple of years.
